Hello
Hello and welcome! I’m Laura, a Community Arts Practitioner, Textile Artist and Public Historian specialising in large-scale participatory textile projects.
Through collaborative textile making, I work with communities, museums and heritage organisations to explore stories of place, identity and belonging. My projects bring people together to research, share and stitch collective narratives, transforming lived experiences into powerful public artworks. Using slow, story-based textile processes, participants are invited to reflect on their own histories and connections to place while contributing to ambitious collaborative pieces, from community quilts and banners to narrative embroideries and public textile installations.
Community Textile Projects
I specialise in developing and facilitating large-scale community textile projects that bring people together through shared making and storytelling. These projects create space for reflection, conversation and connection, often exploring themes of heritage, migration, cultural identity and collective memory. Working with participants of all ages and backgrounds, I use inclusive and trauma-informed approaches to ensure everyone feels welcome and able to contribute. The resulting artworks become powerful shared documents of community experience — celebrating stories that might otherwise go unheard.
Working with Museums and Heritage Organisations
Alongside community projects, I collaborate with museums, libraries and heritage organisations to create participatory programmes that help communities connect with collections and local histories. Through workshops, research-led making and collaborative installations, participants engage with historical narratives while contributing their own voices and experiences. This work helps museums broaden representation, deepen engagement and bring collections to life in meaningful ways.
Slow Stitching and Storytelling
My practice is rooted in slow stitching; a calm, reflective process that encourages participants to work with simple hand stitches to create meaningful textile pieces. Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi, slow stitching embraces slowness, process and the beauty of imperfection. Participants are encouraged to incorporate memories, symbolism and personal stories within cloth, creating tactile works that invite conversation, reflection and remembrance. No previous needlework experience is required, the focus is on storytelling, connection and the joy of making together.
Let’s Work Together
Through Every Stitch A Story, I create projects that bring communities together, spark conversation and transform shared experiences into lasting textile artworks. If you’re a museum, community organisation, funder or curator interested in developing a collaborative textile project, workshop series or exhibition, I would love to hear from you. Please get in touch to start a conversation.
